Vancouver & Juan de Fuca Straits, ‘83

To Larry McDonald, dramaturge, Ottawa

Dear Larry it has been a summer spent with throes

and a lot later than hope too

no doubt though a kind of peace allows

the hot wind to wave the grass.

Peter fielded me from an aberrant drunkenness

at a fish dinner with other bards

more expensive than gooey crayfish bodies

cheap from Pacific Fisheries in Courtenay Place

or even costly slabs of salmon I ate

with Michele & Mark

discoslop in the tourist sector

airconditioned heart pumping icy sweat

down my flanks — no mean feet.

“Hello Sunrise”

that morning “the sun rose in the west”

a sense of order corroded from within.

Your house was great

without cocktail piano for breakfast

& helped move “Canada” off the concept track

where leaves fall & doors open

in the midst of dangers.

With my kids I am building a raft

we plan to call Sour Cream: Spirit of ‘84

& to sail off to the goulash of future

in the sense of Contract Bridge redeals

though the word comes from savage Magyars

who seasoned rotten meat with rotten milk

provoking their raiding furies

I hope you are all keeping your food down

& cuddling your babies

which also takes time.

I got lost in your lovely street of leaves in Ottawa

& was like a kid again

kicking up leaves in the street

like embers — smoke rising at stars

if you have to fall

fall on your feet

I mean it.
